This Pissed Off Brit Beautifully Explains Why Tipping Is Bulls**t [WATCH]
Kicking off a couple extra dollars for exceptional service seems like the norm, and probably not even a big deal in American culture, but this British dude does not understand why we tip so much in the US.
In both an angry and comical way, the YouTube channel “Grade A Under A” explains that tipping is very much only practiced for convenience in the UK, and it is stupid to give away money for free, for no reason.
“You think you deserve a tip for putting on a fake smile for me and carrying my curly fries from the kitchen to my table? Fuck off, love!”
He makes a few key points and even goes after arguments made in favor of tipping as he feels the only reason we do it is because it’s a “Please don’t spit in my food the next time,” bribe.
Here are some of his arguments:
__________
Why do we only tip at restaurants?
The narrator doesn’t get why most places in the world only tip at restaurants. He made the point that when he gets his phone and electricity bill, he pays whatever is stated, and would never give them extra money. We’ll tip someone who’s nice to us at a restaurant, but not someone who’s nice to us at a grocery store. There’s no explanation for it.
__________
“Waiters and waitresses don’t make enough.”
The narrator immediately calls bullshit on this notion, saying it’s not our responsibility to pay the server’s salary, it’s the restaurant’s. The restaurant should be getting that heat, not the customer.
__________
“They work hard. They deserve a tip.”
The narrator asks why no one tipped him as a teacher, as he did a fantastic job teaching, and his job was way more important than making sandwiches.
__________
“You should probably still tip.”
After going off for five minutes on how tipping is stupid, the narrator said we should still tip, not because it makes sense, but because we’ll probably have our food spit on if we don’t. If we’re regulars at a restaurant and don’t wan’t to build the kind of rep that makes the server want to rub one out on our food, it’s a good idea to tip.
__________
So after all that, we should still tip, whether it goes against principle or not. The dude does make some good points, points that have been shared by Shake Shack, and even Joe’s Crab Shack when they eliminated tipping at their establishments. Restaurants should pay their servers enough to not need tips, but until then, it’s probably a good idea to tip.
Will tipping soon be a thing of the past? Who knows, but don’t risk getting your food spat on.
This dude’s rant gets 4 clapping Shias:
