Web Designer Creates Real-Life ‘Wayne’s World’ Licorice Dispenser For Your Car
The 1992 comedy classic and SNL spin-off Wayne’s World gifted us countless unforgettable moments in pop culture history. From “Schwing!” to the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody sing-along, the movie is packed with hilarious highlights. But here’s one you might have forgotten: the Mirthmobile’s licorice dispenser. Mounted on the roof of Garth’s customized car, the dispenser is a clear plastic dome filled with red licorice, complete with a hole for dispensing and a hinged blade for cutting.
Candy Phelps, a web designer for startups and owner of the web design company Bizzy Bizzy, recalls being around 13 years old when she first saw Wayne’s World and the legendary licorice dispenser. It was love at first sight, leading her on an unfulfilling treasure hunt for the real-life version. Thirty years later, the car-mounted candy distributor was still swirling around Phelps’s mind. During this period she continued her search, hoping someone similarly passionate about the movie gadget had “defictionalized” it.
Sadly, the search didn’t deliver results. She did, however, discover that around 500 people a month shared her dream of licorice on-the-go. The closest was a 3D-printed one that a fan made, but unfortunately, didn’t mass-produce. Rather than discouraging Phelps, it had the opposite effect. She decided to put her web design skills to work and created a mock website for the fictional dispenser to test the response, but listed it as temporarily out of stock. Surprisingly, there were dozens of responses.
Phelps spent the next year developing several prototypes, ironing out the details, and eventually launching a new company called Motormouth. The flagship product, dubbed the Party On! Licorice Dispenser, is priced at $38 and available online. This plastic device can be mounted on your car’s roof or dashboard and is compatible with strawberry-flavored red licorice, anise-flavored black licorice, or Red Ropes—the brand featured in Wayne’s World.
The website also offers licorice refills, a monthly subscription service, and even the iconic Wayne’s World hat. Looking to the future, Phelps hopes to see the dispenser stocked in novelty gift shops.
“Sales are not a lot yet, but the interest is definitely high,” Phelps said in an interview with The Cap Times. “If somebody wants it, they want it really bad, and there’s nowhere else to buy it.”
