This Boxed Wine Brand Is Winning Over The Hard Seltzer And Tequila Crowd
Nomadica Wines wants to show you that wine isn’t as intimidating as you might think. In fact, if you like hard seltzers or tequila, you might love their selection of boxed and canned wines.
Nomadica founder Kristin Olszewski, a former sommelier at fine-dining establishments like Nancy Silverton’s Osteria Mozza, is now bringing wine to the masses. In 2017, she noticed a gap between the appeal of wine and the preferences of modern consumers who value convenience and sustainability. With Nomadica, she set out to offer quality wine in eco-friendly packaging, making fine wine accessible to anyone over 21.
In a time when wine traditions are being rewritten, Olszewski is leading the charge in shaking up the industry. As the mind behind Nomadica wines, she’s not just breaking norms — she’s bridging the gap and winning over hard seltzer and tequila enthusiasts, drawing in a new wave of younger, adventurous drinkers by making wine more approachable.
“There’s this popular misconception that a great wine costs a lot of money, which it doesn’t,” said Nomadica Founder Kristin Olszewski. “You can get inexpensive bottles of wine that are still high quality. I noticed that as soon as I kind of held people’s hand and walked them through the door of wine, they were hooked.”
“I wanted to do that on a larger scale as we all kind of trend towards what’s natural, what’s minimally processed, what’s better for you,” she adds. “It always seemed like such a myth to me that people are drinking these ready to drink cocktails that have a ton of sugar or a ton of chemicals instead of just drinking wine.”
Through Nomadica, Olszewski is not only bringing younger consumers to the wine category but she’s also redefining what it means to enjoy wine in the modern world. “I really like to overemphasize that wine is not super precious–just taste it, just drink it. And when in doubt with a pairing, just go with bubbles. Bubbles can literally pair with everything from oysters and crudo to a steak dinner. Don’t worry too much about the rules. Obviously, I put fine wine in the can, so I’m not worried about rules, but that’s my ethos.”
Nomadica’s appeal isn’t just its accessibility and portability. The brand is also committed to craftsmanship and innovation. Each box and can encapsulates Olszewski’s vision of small-batch wines sourced from renowned vineyards, packaged in eco-friendly containers.
“When I found out that a majority of the carbon footprint in a bottle of wine comes from the actual glass bottle itself, I was shocked,” said Olszewski, who also has a background in sustainable agriculture. “Only 30% of glass wine bottles are recycled in the US. They’re highly energy intensive to make, really heavy to ship and the fact is most wine does not need to be in a glass bottle.
With the rising demand for convenient, eco-friendly wine options, the global canned wine market is expected to see significant growth. According to Persistence Market Research, the market, valued at $773.4 million in 2023, is projected to expand at a CAGR of 18.3%, reaching $2.5 billion by 2030.
“There are some wines that you want to age for years and years and years before you drink it–barolo, barco, bordeaux, champagne–but most wine is not in that camp,” she added. “Anything that you’re consuming that’s fresh, vibrant, and young actually maybe is better served in a can or a box, so we were the first people to do fine wine in a can.”
Nomadica Boxed Wines are available in Red, White, Orange and Rosé. Each 3L box retails for $50 and houses the equivalent of 4 bottles.
