Subway Surpasses McDonald’s as World’s Largest Restaurant Chain

According to a report out of the Wall Street Journal earlier today, Subway has surpassed McDonald’s as the world’s largest restaurant chain in terms of sheer units. At the end of 2010, Subway restaurants clocked in at 33,749 units worldwide while McDonald’s fell short about a thousand units at 32,737. The sandwich shop has experienced its growth at the hand of many of its unconventional locations, finding haven in gas stations and shopping malls, along with their traditional locations. Subway’s sheer growth is nothing new, passing the number of McDonald’s in the U.S. about nine years ago, with ferocious plans to expand its global offerings over the next couple years.
