Stephen Colbert Doesn’t Want a Tomato Picked by a Mexican

While there is little funny about the issue of migrant farm labor, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert took his sarcastic brand of humor to Capitol Hill earlier this morning to make his points heard. The testimony can be viewed after the jump, but some highlights from his speech include him reiterating that, “this is America. I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American, then sliced by a Guatemalan, and served by a Venezuelan in a spa where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian.”

Colbert wasn’t all jokes before the panel, he had suggestions too: “maybe the easier answer, scientists should develop fruit that picks themselves”. OK, so maybe he was all jokes. The question is, do you think Colbert’s appearance helps the situation? Was what he was saying important, defacing, or uplifting? Those he presented to were not necessarily impressed, but it’s no doubt that his celebrity is at the very least bringing light to the plight of migrant worker issues on American soil (one pun too many), but were any solutions really brought to light?
