Saudi Arabia Opens Its First Liquor Store

After 70 years, you can now legally buy booze in Saudi Arabia — depending on who you are.

According to reports, the country’s first liquor store opened last month in the capital of Riyadh. The store is located in the diplomatic quarter of the city and is accessible only to non-Muslim diplomats.

The store comes with strict rules: You need the Diplo app to enter and shop as well as be approved by the Saudi Foreign Ministry. Purchases are also subject to an individual monthly quota.

Drinking is forbidden in the Islamic faith and alcohol has been banned in Saudi Arabia since 1952. However, foreign embassies are able to import it under specified agreements with the government.

Saudi Arabia imposes penalties, including lashes, on those caught drinking or selling alcohol illegally.
