This Spot Is The ‘Subway’ Of Vietnamese Spring Rolls
Located on Union Street in Old Town Pasadena, CA, where a local foodie scene is brewing, Paper Rice is a fast-casual restaurant that specializes in Subway-style customizable spring rolls. It was opened in 2020 by husband and wife duo Jens Kristen and Lee Diep, who were inspired to put a new spin on traditional Vietnamese spring rolls. They were joined by three of Diep’s eight siblings and together they run Paper Rice as a family business.
The inspiration also came from home, where it’s normal for the couple to create custom spring rolls using leftover chicken, beef or fresh vegetables and herbs. They wanted Paper Rice to have the same spirit, letting people get creative with something they’re already familiar with.
There, customers can fill their spring rolls with noodles, fresh vegetables and herbs, along with marinated proteins like grilled chicken, beef, pork belly, pork sausage, and tofu.
Aside from spring rolls, you can order bowls without rice paper, and Vietnamese classics like Banh Mi sandwiches, sticky rice patties, and coffee served with sweetened condensed milk. Two years after opening, Paper Rice already has plans for two new locations in Venice and West LA next year. If you’re looking for a tasty twist on tradition, customizable spring rolls should definitely be on your list.
