New Oreo Campaign Proves Owl City Can Actually Write Something Sappier than ‘Fireflies’

Singer-songwriter Adam Young is too precious for this world. While the rest of us seethe through rush hour and knock back coffee beans brewed blacker than our souls, Young (better known for his stage name “Owl City”) is just sitting here, singing about the three little pigs and just sounding all-around better-adjusted than the rest of the general population.

What a dick.

Following the success of 2009’s “Fireflies,” Owl City is back to haunt our ever-bitter eardrums for Oreo’s new “Wonderfilled” multimedia campaign. The new 90-second animated spot has Young asking what the world might be like if someone would just share Oreos with monsters, whether sharks would befriend seals, whether vampires would drink milk instead of blood.

Because “crème does wondrous things inside a chocolate sandwich dream.” Yes really.

The idea is that for the past hundred years, Oreos have represented nothing if not childhood delight and wonder, but the simple truth is that it’s just. too. cute. — even coming from someone who once bragged about getting “a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs.”

The campaign will also have people breaking into song all over the country, kicking off today with a New York event featuring 500 a cappella singers sharing Oreos with the friendliest commuters in the world during rush hour, and culminating in a group sing-along in Union Square. The tour will then continue through Chicago on May 16 and Los Angeles on May 17, according to a press release.

It’s a bit sad to realize that if we lived in happier times, a song about the Big Bad Wolf being BFFs with the three little pigs wouldn’t be nearly as off-putting.  But no. It’s 2013, folks, so you can just  take your happiness and good vibes and shove them up your —

Check out the anthem’s syrupy lyrics for yourself below, and try not to choke on those dry Oreos you’re eating. Or you know, do.

“Wonder if I gave an Oreo
to The Big Bad Wolf
How would the story go?
Would he still go huff & puff?
Or would he bring those pigs cool stuff
To decorate the deck he helped them build?
Would they not get killed?

Wonder if I gave an Oreo
To a vampire in a creepy show
Would he not act so undead?
Would he thirst for milk instead?
I’ve just got this feeling that it might work out all right

‘Cause crème does wondrous things inside a chocolate sandwich dream

If I gave them to great white sharks, would they share them with baby seals?
Would they call up a giant squid for a friendly meal?

Wonder if I gave an Oreo
Wonder if I gave an Oreo
What if I gave an Oreo to you?”
