Watching Molten Salt Blow Up A Fish Tank In Super Slow Motion Is Mesmerizing

Usually, putting salt in water is the beginning of a good pasta recipe, but in this case, the results were a lot more explosive.

YouTube channel “TheBackyardScientist” saw a video where molten salt caused an explosion when being immersed in water. Nauturally, as scientists, they wanted to find out how and why that happened, so they put it to the test.

They used kosher salt for this particular experiment and melted it down to 1,474 degrees Fahrenheit, which is its official melting point:

While a bit of an explosion occurred, that’s not what we all want to see from a viral YouTube video. Try again:

They gave it another shot, with even hotter salt and poured it in really fast, which caused the crazy kaboom we all wanted to see:

The sodium chloride created a giant gas bubble, which created even more tiny little gas bubbles, causing the explosion and busting up the fish tank.
