Mars To Start Delivering M&Ms And Other Candy Via Electric Heavy Duty Trucks
Looking to the future, massive food company Mars is introducing 300 heavy duty electric trucks to its fleet of semis in Europe. The company aims to have the updated vehicles operational by 2030, while the move is said to be the largest electrification of freight trucking on the continent ever. Mars owns 50 international brands, and by transitioning to electric trucks, can actually reduce global emissions.
The company is partnering with Swedish-owned transport company Einride and trucks have already begun to hit Germany — routes for the UK and the Netherlands are to follow. Robert Falck, CEO and Founder at Einride, said in a press release, “This sets a precedent for other players in the freight industry to follow, showcasing the mass potential of electrification at scale.”
Einride donated two Mercedes-Benz eActros 300s and two charging stations with four charging points to Mars. The trucks are equipped with three battery packs, with enough power to cover 300 kilometers/186 miles with an average load. Mars plans to invest $1 billion over the next three years in an effort to reach its zero-emissions target by 2050. The operations will eventually be assisted by an autonomous pilot project, i.e. AI.
Making the switch to electric trucks will help Mars reduce CO2 emissions by 20,000 tons per year.
