Keith Lee Uncovers Atlanta’s Absurd Dining Rules, Sparking Major Debate And Backlash
If by now you are saying, “Who is Keith Lee?” then chances are you know where this story is going. In case you missed it, Atlanta restaurants rules are out of this world, and not in a good way.
Who is Keith Lee?
Meet Lee, a 27-year-old ex-MMA fighter turned TikTok sensation. His claim to fame? Rating restaurants on a 10-point scale and sharing his food adventures. After amassing a dedicated and fervent following on TikTok, Lee’s reviews have become the Midas touch for restaurants, with his recommendations leading to long lines and booming business. With 14 million followers on the social media platform, Lee’s preferred to go incognito, letting family members place his orders to dodge the VIP treatment.
What happened to Keith Lee in Atlanta?
The social media maven gained widespread attention when he shared his exasperating dining encounters in Atlanta, causing a stir and receiving both praise and criticism on various social media platforms.
Lee documented his attempts to dine at Old Lady Gang and The Real Milk and Honey, with both establishments exhibiting a lack of accommodation. Weekend takeout and DoorDash services were said to be not accessible. Additionally, Lee’s efforts to place an order via phone were disregarded.
Lee first sent his family in to secure a table, who were initially informed of a one-hour wait to dine at Old Lady Gang. However, upon recognition of his identity, a table was promptly offered to him. Lee politely declined the immediate service, refusing to be served ahead of other hungry customers, emphasizing his desire for the same service experience as everyone else.
So, what’s so wrong with the Atlanta dining experience?
In short, a lot of trendy and hip restaurants have been criticized for their seemingly absurd rules.
The dining landscape in Atlanta is known for its peculiar and seemingly nonsensical restrictions, coupled with subpar customer service, often prompting online critique. The situation with Lee escalated to the extent that even chart-topping rapper Cardi B became part of the conversation joking, “Atlanta restaurants, they don’t like to make money.” She further clarified, “But I always find this eating in Atlanta: It is such an event. You could barely order in Atlanta restaurants. They don’t do no pickup orders, they don’t do deliveries.”
Since Lee’s visit to Atlanta, a reckoning of sorts has taken shape within the city’s dining scene. With many locals bringing up and complaining about the the following rules of dining at many popular restaurants in the city:
- No water for your table until everyone is seated. This one has to be the most outrageous.
- No reservations. Should you just dine alone then? This means getting ready to wait more than 90 minutes for a meal.
- No call-in orders. So how exactly did they make money during the pandemic?
- No large parties. More than 4 is unacceptable, which would not work for any family that has more than 2 kids.
- No modification to orders over $75. Basically no dressing on the side allowed.
- No splitting checks. Guess you better show up with your credit card with no balance. This would 100% be a problem in NY.
- No waiting inside for to-go orders. If you have toddlers, guess you have to leave them at home then too.
- 18% gratuity automatically added to everything. Not sure why they need a tip with all these rules?
Given these stringent regulations, there’s no wonder that heated debates and opinions of Atlanta’s restaurant scene have occurred as a result of Keith Lee’s recent visit.
