Hits Only: The 5 Best Dishes I’ve Had This Week
I’d gladly wax poetic all day about the undeniable, yet unnecessarily bougie combination of caviar and fried chicken. It’s peak “treat yourself” activities, and we deserve to partake.
Katsu Sando w/ Caviar Ranch
Hibi — Los Angeles, CA
What I said above, but also, Hibi ups the luxury quotient with the Japanese milk bread — the Lamb truck of carbs.
Dino Beef Rib
Axiom Kitchen — Long Beach, CA
Getting my Fred Flintstone on fulfills the primal urge to sink teeth into prehistoric-sized hunks of juicy flesh. Though pretty much every barbecue joint and pop-up does Dino Beef Ribs now, Axiom has a T-Rex leg up on the competition by slathering a secret “California Herb Oil” all over it. The result is a depth of flavor that features an herbaceous, garlicky kiss goodnight to your hunger.
Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie
Costco
Ever since we first reported on this back in March, I’ve been on the hunt. Several visits proved unfruitful — until last week. The first slice proved to be everything I’d ever imagined this majestic pie to be: peanut butter paradise underneath a velvety chocolate sky. Scores big points with the Asian delegation for being a dessert that’s “not too sweet.”
Smashburger Burrito
Golden State — Los Angeles, CA
Golden State expertly slangs tremendous burgers, so of course flipping their usual into burrito form would bang harder than Chef Carmy locked in a walk-in fridge.
Deviled Eggs
Native Son — Santa Ana, CA
Deviled eggs are starting to make their way into “if I see it on the menu, I’ll order it” territory and I really don’t know why. Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason behind a craving, and that’s fine. All I know is that the ones at Native Son satisfy said cravings with the help of a crispy prosciutto chip crowning each egg like the royal family.
