Hits Only: The 5 Best Dishes I’ve Had This Week
Let’s celebrate the spectacle of torching and searing our food. Who doesn’t love a good dinner and show, with chefs busting out the kitchen torch always inciting oohs, aahs, and cameras like diners were paparazzi at a red carpet premier.
Elevated “California Roll”
Hansei — Los Angeles, California
Chef Chris Ono of Hansei wields a touch of high end wizardry by uplifting the usually ho-hum California roll with premium ingredients like Dungeness crab, Santa Barbara sea urchin, and Yasutomi cucumber.
Truffle Shoyu Seared Salmon
i8 Sushi — Silver Lake, California
Has this dish made the Hits Only list twice now? I guess that’s a testament to how amazing this dish really is. Order it now.
Laarb Chicken Wings
Ruam Mitr — Los Angeles, California
One of my favorite chicken wings at one of my favorite Thai restaurants in LA. Chef Kwan Disbanchong applies the popular Southeast Asian meat salad’s flavors to an addicting sauce that then drenches perfectly crunchy chicken wings that mimic thunderclaps upon each bite.
Spicy Chicken Sandwich x Palabok Hack
Jollibee
Fellow Foodbeast Costa was in his bag with this concoction. The deviant energy of a secret menu hack is always going to hit. Now take the savory savior that is palabok, a Filipino noodle dish that’s dressed in a pork and shrimp sauce, and anoint a Jollibee spicy fried chicken sandwich. Praise anything and everything, especially Costa, for this bright idea.
Grilled Cheese Dipping Taco
Taco Bell
It’s as if Jack In The Box’s tacos glowed up to feature slow-braised meat and a melty cheese dipping sauce. This new menu item from Taco Bell is a “come at me bro” to Mr. Box, delicious hubris and all.
