‘Gravy’ Is A James Beard Award-Winning Podcast That Every Foodie Should Tune In To
Food plays an important role in our everyday lives. Beyond mere sustenance, it serves as the connective tissue of culture, bringing together people from similar backgrounds and vastly different ones. No matter how you dice it, food is a source of infinite inspiration. A great example of this is “Gravy,” a podcast that explores the American South through the lens of food.
Gravy’s deep-dive into the food history of the Deep South has unearthed truly unique tales. From discovering Galveston, Texas’ surprising Sicilian cuisine scene, to the Black history of the sweet potato, Gravy shows just how far food and culture can spread. In fact, Gravy was named “Publication of the Year” by the James Beard Foundation, which is considered by many as the “Oscars of food.”
The power of Gravy is that it isn’t only about food, it also challenges stereotypes, explores the role food plays in lesser-known communities, and provides a platform for everyday cooks that ensure we stay fed.
Gravy is hosted by Melissa Hall, who’s a former public defender and lifelong home cook that works for the Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA), the production company behind the podcast. Hall shares hosting duties with Mary Beth Lasseter and Sara Camp Milam. The former is SFA’s co-director, while the latter is the podcast editor.
You can tune into Gravy on Apple Podcasts, where episodes are released bi-weekly on Wednesdays. New episodes started on August 14.
