Gas Leak From Soda Machine Leads To Woman’s Death

Huffington Post reports, a woman was found dead in a McDonald’s restroom.

Investigators discovered a gas leak from the soda machine that led to 10 people getting sick. The machine, which pumped carbonation into the soda, had a leak that caused gas build-up over an entire week in the women’s restroom.

Pooler Police Chief, Mark Revenew stated, “It caused what is normally a harmless gas to be pumped into the wall cavity and leak into the women’s restroom. At a high level of concentration, it displaces oxygen.”

On Sept 7, firefighters were called to the restaurant to discover two women unconscious in the restroom. They were immediately rushed to a hospital in Savannah where eight others from the McDonald’s were being treated. One of the women, Eighty-year old Anne Felton, died the next day.

The restaurant owners have since replaced the gas lines and valves and have reopened the restaurant. The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety administration have begun conducting an investigation on workplace safety violations.
