Fukushima Plate: Ceramic Plate With Radiation Meter

What does the future hold? Maybe a ceramic plate that will visualize the amount of radiation in our food? Oh wait, #thefutureisnow.

At a time where concern over contaminated food is at a relative high, Nils Ferbers Fukushima Plate is an ordinary kitchen plate with a built-in radioactive meter meant to visualize the level of your food’s contamination. Utilizing ring-shaped OLEDs, the plates represent three different levels of perpetuated danger:

When all OLEDs are off, your food is safe from radioactivity. A small light on the bottom shows that the plate is indeed working.

One glowing ring indicates that there is slightly increased radiation coming from your food, but depending on your programmed settings, shouldn’t be too much to worry about. A second glowing ring tells you that your dish has a questionable amount of radiation, and the red ring is a worrisome note that warrants a definite proper disposal of your radiation-filled meal.

The most interesting part about the design is that the radiation sensitivity meter can be adjusted by the end-user, accounting for different perceived risks that people have, regardless of what governments and other officials may impress.
