Food Trucks Not Accepting Credit Cards: Are They Blowing It?

Gourmet Food Truck popularity is soaring to new heights, but are their “technology savvy” owners blowing it by not catering to customers who may want to pay with a Credit or Debit card? With the rise in available food trucks, one of their defining traits were there open-armed acceptance of social media and new technologies. To be frank, without these technologies, a vast majority of trucks wouldn’t be able to operate or communicate with their customers.

While some trucks have found ways to accept payments, many have been eerily slow to adapt. This process has left many customers wanting more from their favorite trucks, often finding themselves choosing different food options solely based on credit card availability. In an era where it’s not uncommon to walk around sans-cash, the question seems to pose itself, “Do you think it’s a deal breaker when a food truck is on a cash-only system?”

This isn’t to say all Food Trucks are slow to adapt; we just caught wind that the Southern California-based Bacon Mania truck has adapted Square technology, a mobile card reader making it increasingly efficient for them to accept credit and debit card payments on the fly. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for many other food trucks popping up around town.

So the question stands, in an industry so proudly utilizing new technologies such as social media and smart phones, is it an inexcusable blunder not to cater to their plastic-paying customers? Do you decide where you eat based on whether they accept your credit card or not? Tell us about your favorite food trucks, do they accept card? Do you wish they did?
