Doritos Launches ‘Zero Gravity’ Cool Ranch Flavor Designed For Space

Chips are undoubtedly one of Earthlings’ favorite snacks, with Lay’s, Fritos, Cheetos, and Doritos leading the pack. As Polaris Dawn prepares to launch into space on August 26, Doritos saw an opportunity and made it their mission to bring their snacks to the final frontier. They’ve now proudly introduced their limited-edition Minis Cool Ranch Zero Gravity Flavored Tortilla Chip, officially making history. It’s one small step for man, one giant leap for chips.

The astronaut crew can now nibble safely on these chips in zero gravity all while enjoying the panoramic views of the vast cosmos. Made specifically for space, Doritos has thoughtfully designed the chips as mini single bites all while preserving the distinguishable zesty Cool Ranch taste.

The real challenge with potato chips in space isn’t the packaging—it’s the crumbs. In zero gravity, crumbs would scatter everywhere, creating a significant problem. As a result, foods like chips are arguably not ideal for zero gravity.

We consulted NASA’s official documents on “Food Suitability for Spaceflight” to understand the criteria for space travel food: it must be easy to package, fit into acceptable portion sizes, travel well and fit into storage compartments, store for long periods without spoiling, and be simple to prepare. Most importantly, the food must have an acceptable taste and not produce crumbs. Doritos Cool Ranch Zero Gravity has successfully met all these requirements.

“The limitless possibilities of space inspired us to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” said Chris Bellinger, Chief Creative Officer of PepsiCo Foods North America. “This mission is a testament to our commitment to delivering bold experiences and flavors, even in the most unexpected places.”

Just as we were impressed by Doritos’ groundbreaking release, the brand announced its partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission in conjunction with the product launch.

“Through this partnership, Doritos and the Polaris Dawn crew are being catalysts for change by helping St. Jude raises survival rates for more of the 400,000 kids around the world with cancer every year,” said Richard C. Shadyac Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Folks around the globe can join the mission and donate at StJude.org/DoritosInSpace to win a chance to experience the limited-edition Cool Ranch Zero Gravity chips in special glow-in-the-dark packaging. Doritos is also making a $500,000 donation to St. Jude to further the institution’s lifesaving missions.

Prepare for the launch of Polaris Dawn on August 26, featuring Doritos Cool Ranch Zero Gravity Flavored Tortilla Chips.
