DoorDash Releases Its ‘Dash From the Past 2023’ Trend Report

DoorDash has shared this year’s trend report and as expected, it highlights America’s everyday foodie cravings. From classic comforts to quirky combos, it spills all the tea. This year is special for the delivery service, as it celebrates its 10 year anniversary. In that time, the company has grown from a food delivery-only app to an “almost anything” one, allowing customers to order everything from Chinese food or groceries, to clothing or skincare products.

The below data was pulled from orders made between January 1, 2023 to October 31, 2023. We sorted through and narrowed down some trends that we feel carry the Foodbeast spirit.

Top Ordered Food Nationwide

As with last year and each year since DoorDash’s inception, fries still reign supreme as the top-ordered food nationwide. No surprise there, it’s hard to compete with edible perfection. What may be surprising, though, is that finger foods make up most of the top ten. Classic go-to’s like chicken quesadillas, mozzarella sticks, chips & queso, chicken wings, and even garlic naan prove that Americans simply can’t keep their hands off of savory convenience.

Most Unexpected DoubleDash Pairings

Whether attempting to remedy a serious case of the munchies or simply exploring the culinary possibilities, there was a considerable uptick in Dashers ordering odd food pairings. The top three head-scratching combos were hot sauce & cinnamon twists, hashbrowns & soda, and fries & chili. That said, hot sauce and cinnamon twists is an odd enough pairing to make even the most adventurous Foodbeasts say, “Huh?”

While clear buzzy bevvies like vodka, tequila, seltzers, and sauvignon blanc still compose most of this list, 2023 was a great year for whiskey and rum lovers. DoorDash saw a 648% increase in whiskey orders and a 317% increase in rum. One thing’s for sure, whether you prefer light or dark liquor, there were a lot of hangovers going around this year. There was a spike in ibuprofen orders on the days following holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, and New Year’s Eve. The day after Halloween in particular received a 400% increase in orders for ibuprofen.

Another interesting trend from this year was special requests. The cities that made the most special requests were Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta, and the surprising food item that kept appearing in orders was ranch dressing. Americans just couldn’t get enough of the tasty condiment, which makes sense considering how much we love finger foods.

DoorDash’s “Dash From The Past 2023 Trend Report” is filled with all sorts of interesting insights into America’s ordering habits. Beyond ordering lunch, more importantly, it shows how thoughtful and connected we are as a people. In addition to this year’s top trends, the report also includes trends from DoorDash’s past 10 years of delivery service.
