Coca-Cola Revives Iconic Mexican Soft Drink Barrilitos For A New Generation
Born and raised in California, I’ll admit I’m spoiled when it comes to great Mexican food, especially after living in San Diego, just a skip from the border. While I still spot those colorful Barrilitos sodas at the occasional family-owned taqueria or food truck, people across the country might wonder—whatever happened to those historic Barrilitos bottled sodas?
Once a staple Mexican soft drink, Barrilitos flew under the radar for years despite its deep roots, first launched in Monterrey, Mexico, back in 1938. Coca-Cola, which acquired the brand in 2008, recently announced an exciting relaunch of these vibrant, fruit-forward sodas, complete with a refreshed formula aimed at reconnecting with consumers.
In line with 2024’s nostalgia-fueled marketing trends, Coca-Cola’s revival of Barrilitos taps into both tradition and the vibrant spirit of Latino culture. By reintroducing this celebrated Mexican soda, Coca-Cola aims to connect with its Latino audience and appeal to a new generation of consumers drawn to authentic, culturally-rooted products.
“Barrilitos is evolving to meet the needs of a new generation, without losing sight of its rich history. We’ve infused Barrilitos with a refreshed brand identity while preserving the classic flavors and traditions that have made it a beloved part of Latino households. This relaunch is an invitation to experience Barrilitos and celebrate its heritage in a whole new way”, said Maria Correa, Barrilitos Lead.
Coca-Cola is relaunching Barrilitos in California and Texas to start, but according to the global soft drink manufacturer, there could be a near-term expansion into additional markets such as Nevada and Oklahoma.
Available in two sizes—a 12oz glass bottle and a 1.5L PET multiserve bottle—the soft drink is crafted with fruit flavors and cane sugar. It offers four flavors: Mandarina (Mandarin), Manzana (Apple), Piña (Pineapple), and Ponche de Frutas (Fruit Punch).
