How This Kid Made Over $290,000 Carrying Strangers’ Groceries

Chauncy Black, 16, wanted to bring home some donuts for his family, as they lived in a run-down home in Memphis, lacking food and lacking funds.

Hoping to find a little help from the “rich people’s Kroger,” Black made his way to the supermarket, offering to help shoppers carry and unload their groceries, asking for a dozen donuts in return. It looked like he had no luck, until shopper Matt White decided to lend a hand.

White commented on his experience through a Facebook post, describing how moved he was by spending time with Chauncy. That night, White not only helped with the box of donuts, but he took Black on a legit shopping spree, buying him groceries ranging from essentials like frozen veggies and soap, to general goodies like Cheetos and pizza.

White then told the 16-year-old boy to forget about the bus ride home, as they drove back to Black’s home in White’s car.

That’s when the generous man’s heart sank.

White observed the family’s living conditions, seeing not only makeshift beds made of sleeping bags, but an empty refrigerator.

White then met Black’s mother, who was quivering with an apparent sickness that almost made him break down into tears.

Before White left, he gave Chauncy a hearty hug and counted his blessings, as his small gesture surely gave the Black family some hope, but White’s generosity didn’t stop there.

White started a Go-Fund-Me page titled “Chauncy’s Chance,” where over $289,000 have been raised to help Chauncy get basic needs for himself and his family. In the page’s description, White explains how Black didn’t even have a proper ID, which was keeping him from even applying for a job.

As of this writing, they’re dangerously close to hitting the $295,000 goal and will likely blow past it soon, as the support have been massive, with over 12,000 donations.

Chauncy took a bus to that Kroger, looking for the smallest glimmer of hope, and went home with an opportunity to change his, and his mom’s life.
