These Are The American Grocery Stores With The Cheapest Essentials

The latest data analysis report from the experts at BravoDeal reveals the list of grocery stores across America with the cheapest essentials. Analyzing the prices of a dozen of the most commonly purchased grocery items for a household of three, the study ranked which grocery chains offered the weekly essentials at the most affordable price.

Before we get into the highlights of the results, it should be noted that the 12 most frequently purchased “grocery essentials” included in the study were: eggs, bread, soda, milk, cereal, frozen pizza, chips, laundry detergent, peanut butter, jelly, ham, and chicken breast.

Securing the top position as the cheapest grocery store to get your essentials is Aldi. The German, family-owned discount grocer boasts an average weekly cost of $43.48 for a household of three, with a loaf of bread priced at $1.29, and a dozen eggs at $1.71.

Coming in at second, is Lidl, another German discount grocery chain with locations only along the east coast. They had the cheapest frozen pizza, priced at $3.47, with the average weekly cost of $54.24.

Rounding off the podium at third is Trader Joe’s. Even though the well-known grocery chain provides affordable basics like white bread at $1.99, peanut butter at $2.49, and an average weekly cost of $60.58, let’s face it — we don’t visit TJ’s for the essentials. It’s all about the delightful and inventive offerings from their R&D department.

The Albertsons and Kroger umbrella of stores take the fourth and seventh spots respectively, but until their supposed merger from 2022 is finalized, their weekly average cost for a household of three are $63.18 and $65.78, respectively.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Sam’s Club and Costco round out the list at tenth and eleventh place respectively, as the only two membership-only warehouse grocers on the list. While their weekly average costs for a three-person household are $106.47 and $267.94 respectively, Sam’s Club offers the cheapest chicken breasts per pound.

In discussing the research findings, CEO and Co-Founder at BravoDeal, Marco Farnararo acknowledged: “With the cost of living having spiked for many households across the nation in the years following the pandemic, many are looking to save wherever they can. Groceries have gone up by approximately 25% since 2020, according to Bloomberg, so consumers are keen to find the best deals and the best value retailers to do their weekly shop with.”
