I Had No Idea What A 50/50 Martini Was Until I Made It And My Mouth Orgasm’d

There’s a 50/50 chance that you’re unfamiliar with the 50/50 martini, but don’t worry, you’re not alone. It turns out most people don’t even really know what a martini is, according to bartender Ryan Wainwright of Terrine in Los Angeles.

Last week, we saw Ryan school the guys of Foodbeast on everything from classifying cocktails to French vocabulary in GQ’s Where’s The Bar. He also graciously revealed how to build a classic 50/50 martini cocktail with a twist, comprised of Bombay Sapphire Gin, dry and traditional vermouth, sherry, and orange.
So where does the 50/50 come in? Essentially, the ratio refers to the cocktail’s equal parts of spirit and vermouth, plus the bittering agent. But enough with all this math talk, let’s jump right into how you can start making these at home and pretend you’re James Bond:

The Stylus (50/50 Martini with a Twist)
1 ½ oz Bombay Sapphire Gin
¾ oz dry vermouth
¾ oz traditional vermouth
¼ oz med. dry sherry (bitter)
orange (for garnish)
1)   Pour Bombay Sapphire Gin, dry and traditional vermouth, and medium dry sherry into a pint glass.
2)   Set an anchor of two ice cubes.
3)   Add a smashed ice to add surface area
4)   Cap off with a few more ice cubes. Stir.
5)   Strain into serving glass. Garnish with orange twist and oil.
