Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell Attempts to Eat 24 Eggs for Charity

It all started with a bet.

Jon Hendren, a 27 year-old writer for somethingawful.com issued a challenge to Smash Mouth’s lead singer Steve Harwell.

In an attempt to garner more exposure for the band, Hendren bet Harwell $20 that he could not eat two dozen eggs in one sitting. Hendren offered to buy the eggs, cook it in any way Harwell wanted, and then meet him anywhere in town just to complete the challenge. Hendren’s only request was that he could film it for YouTube.

Within hours of the tweet, thousands of Hendren’s followers offered to match the $20. The band paid no attention to this so Hendren formally reissued the challenge by publishing a front-page piece on Something Awful.

Harwell finally agreed to the challenge and raised the stakes. If fans could raise $10,000 towards St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital for cancer research, then Harwell would take the challenge. Within the first day, over half the amount had already been pledged and the rest within the next few days.

A long time friend of Harwell, Food Network star Guy Fieri, was brought in to prepare the eggs that consisted of chicken, duck, and quail. The eggs were scrambled and mixed with peppers, onions, jalapeños, tomatoes, and bacon.

Harwell was unable to finish the scramble and even accepted help from members of the audience. He did manage, however, to take the last bite. Though the event was a bit disappointing, Hendren was enthused to see it go as far as it did.

And any money towards cancer research is always a great thing.
