Study Finds The 10 Most Confusing Food & Drink Emojis

Did you know that 3,782 official emojis exist? From classics like the “Loudly Crying Face” to the lesser-known “Dotted Line Face,” there is an emoji for every mood. While most emojis make perfect sense straight up, some don’t translate as well when used to convey another meaning. A new study by Word Tips has analyzed data from around the world to uncover the top 10 most confusing food and drink emojis.

Word Tips created a list of 1,644 popular emojis and used the Ahrefs Keyword Explorer tool to determine which ones received the most “emoji + meaning” searches. Emojis were narrowed down to the most popular, yet confusing, from every country. When it comes to food and drink, the peach emoji was ranked as number one in 47 countries, and it’s popularly used to refer to someone’s butt. The cherries emoji comes in second place and has several suggestive meanings: Breasts, testicles, and virginity.

The rest of the top 10 includes the strawberry, mushroom, avocado, eggplant, wine glass, watermelon, champagne cheers, and coffee emojis. Although, you may find some of these picks surprising, like the wine glass, which appears in different shades and shapes depending on the platform, device, or country. The eggplant emoji needs no introduction, of course, as it’s permanently infamous at this point. That said, watermelon very clearly looks like watermelon, which is confusing in itself.

This only scratches the surface of Word Tips’ extensive study. Click here if you’re interested in which emojis landed in the top 10 overall and whether you’ve been using them correctly or incorrectly.
