L&L Hawaiian BBQ’s Relief Efforts For Maui Wildfire Extended Through Holidays

This past August, rampant wildfires caused untold devastation in Maui, claiming the lives of hundreds. In an effort to assist families affected, popular chain L&L Hawaiian Barbecue created the “Purchase A Meal” community initiative. The relief program was hosted through the L&L mobile app and website from Sept 1 to 15 and has since provided over 2,000 meals. L&L has now announced that it plans to extend the initiative through the holiday season.

“While we were celebrating our third annual National SPAM Musubi Day on August 8 across the country, we received the news of the fires,” said Elisia Flores, CEO of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. “Our first action was to ensure our operators and employees on Maui were safe. We then began planning to do more to help our  ‘ohana on Maui.”

For L&L’s “Purchase A Meal” initiative, people around the world were granted the chance to purchase a 10-dollar plate for a Maui resident in need. L&L partnered with the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and local churches and hotels to distribute the meals to displaced residents, school children, employees, visitors, and first responders.

“I am incredibly grateful that we were able to donate over 2,000 meals to our Maui community who were impacted by the wildfires,” said Cindy Liu, owner of the Honokowai L&L Hawaiian Barbecue location. “I’m proud of our team for their hard work providing our delicious plate lunches to support our beloved neighbors and this month, we’re ready to do more.”

L&L also confirmed that its Lahaina location, which was initially responsible for preparing and delivering the lunch plates, was destroyed in the fires. The owner and her employees all lost their homes, but thankfully, are now safe and have begun helping at L&L’s Honokowai location. Additionally, L&L locations in California, Washington, and Texas each raised Maui relief funds and held candlelight vigils in tribute to the ‘ohana.
