Hits Only: The Best 5 Dishes I’ve Had This Week
The hits continue, as this week had me celebrating the most tender cod ever, paninis in a barbershop, and National Fried Chicken Day.
Fried Chicken
Pioneer Chicken – Boyle Heights, CA
Celebrating National Fried Chicken Day on July 6 required a stop at this Los Angeles legend. Once dominant in the whole state of California, the now elusive Pioneer Chicken’s signature wet batter crunch can be heard loud and clear at two locations in Boyle Heights and Bell Gardens.
Icelandic Cod
Lemon Poppy Kitchen – Los Angeles, CA
Tucked away in the Glassell Park neighborhood of LA is Lemon Poppy Kitchen, a charming and low-key joint that’s the quintessential local gem. Ordered the Icelandic Cod here and I was treated to a perfectly cooked fish that yielded a type of tenderness that r&b singers wait their whole lives to sing about.
Calamansi & Black Pepper Wings
Lia’s Lumpia – San Diego, CA
This right here is the Filipino take on lemon pepper wings. Calamansi’s signature hint of sweetness lends itself to black pepper and crispy chicken wings, proving to be an unrelenting type of addiction for my wing-loving heart.
Monte Cristo Panini
Rosewood Barber Cafe – Anaheim, CA
Who would have thought that some of the best paninis I’ve had can be found at a spot where I can also get a fresh fade and some good coffee?
Cabeza Burrito
Tacos Me Origen – Santa Ana, CA
This local legend is highly revered at the Foodbeast office, serving up some of the best cabeza around. I opted for the burrito just for the fact that I needed all that supple cabeza in one fat portion.
