Could Potato Ice Cream Be The Next Vegan Alternative?

Is this the era of “alternative” foods? According to Plant Based News, a Swedish company named Veg of Lung has just received patent approval for an ice cream that’s made with potatoes, rapeseed oil, and a vegetable protein emulsion.

“We are pleased that a patent is approved in Sweden,” said Professor Eva Tornberg, who is the founder of Veg of Lund, parent company of DUG. “The fact it is based on such an everyday crop as potatoes shows the uniqueness and strength of the patent.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m curious to see if potato ice cream will be the next dairy alternative. Tornberg certainly believes so, and is championing the root veggie as the next big thing in sustainable food. In 2021, DUG hit the market with potato milk. The lesser known milk hasn’t achieved the success that oat has, but is slowly gaining an audience in a number of countries — the UK being one of them.

DUG clearly has a passion for potatoes. In 2022, it expanded beyond milk to include a potato-based smoothie. With the new potato ice cream, the company aims to get a foothold in other markets around the world.

Fredrik Carling, CEO of DUG said, “Just as we did in 2022, we’ve started 2023 with a bang. Earlier this month we announced the launch of DUG in 496 stores of the leading premium Swiss supermarket chain Migros.”
