This Company Wants To Kill The Stress Of Dating Apps With A Pear Emoji

Dubbed “The Biggest Social Experiment,” Pear is a new concept that revolves around creating more transparency when trying to meet the perfect match. It works two ways; on social media, users will include a pear emoji in their bio to let followers know that they’re single, while IRL, the company has created a custom made jade-colored ring. Dating cynicism aside, this approach is actually quite genius.

Calling it a dating app-killer, Pear believes that if 1.2 billion singles around the world wore their ring and shared their status via pear emojis, there would be no need to weather the unpredictable storms of digital dating. Odds are you’ve experienced them before, if not, a close friend or two surely has. Simply put, dating nowadays can often be as fulfilling as your favorite basketball player missing the buzzer-beating bucket.

Pear hopes that their ring will invite conversation, while eliminating the uncertainty of someone’s availability. Each custom ring costs only $25, with 100% of the profits going towards expanding the social experiment, and can be worn on any finger. Currently, the Pear social experiment is moving through the USA, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia. Ringholders will also receive a free invitation to PearFest, promoted as the “biggest singles festival.”

Whether or not the Pear experiment will become a popular indicator for single-ness, the concept itself is interesting and timely during arguably the most challenging dating era in history. Dating apps can sometimes give users the “illusion of options.” When you’re scrolling constantly, the act of actually meeting someone is compromised by the vapidness of swiping left or right. For those unlucky, or lucky if you love singlehood, the Pear emoji and ring can help balance out the playing field more.

If you’re interesting in joining the experiment, you can visit the Pear website for more information.
