Google Doodles often spotlight the magnitude of its subject, whether it be an occasion, person or thing. Today, March 15, has Google Doodle highlighting the classic Filipino dish, adobo.
The significance of this date hinges on when the word “adobo” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in December 2006. It was then added to the word list on the OED’s quarterly update on this day the following year in 2007.
For those unfamiliar, Filipino adobo features a meat — with chicken or pork being the most popular — that’s then braised into a stew that includes vinegar, soy sauce, bay leaves, and black pepper. Interpretations of adobo vary from household to household, with certain tweaks like adding coconut milk or turmeric also lending to the delicious diversity of the dish.
Google tapped in with artist, Anthony Irwin, to create the chicken adobo-themed Google Doodle. Regarding this project Irwin stated, “So I tried to capture that simple childhood joy of leaning in and savoring the kind of food that makes home feel like home.”
