Chick-fil-A Location Receives Backlash For Offering to Pay Volunteers in Chicken Sandwiches

Remember those Trident commercials when people were excited to get paid in gum? Those were hilarious! Especially since paying people in food is clearly a joke that no major corporation should ever do… right? Well that joke went right over a Hendersonville, North Carolina Chick-fil-A’s head as it was reported that it wanted to pay volunteers in fried chicken entrees.

“We are looking for volunteers for our new Drive Thru Express!” the Hendersonville Chick-fil-A said in a Facebook post that has since been deleted after an overwhelming amount of negative comments.

Volunteers at the North Carolina location were slated to get paid five free entrees per one hour shift worked. That’s $5CS (chicken sandwich)/hr! Offering food as compensation after a global pandemic just seems like a deep fried slap in the face. Have you seen how long Chick-fil-A lines can get?

“Thanks for everyone’s concern on this matter,” the Hendersonville restaurant said in a post that said it should not be offering “volunteer” positions. “This is a volunteer based opportunity, which means people can opt in to volunteer if they think it’s a good fit for them. We’ve had multiple people sign up and enjoy doing and have done it multiple times. People who sign up for this chose it voluntarily. We are still hiring full time and part time team members, so if you are interested in working in our store, we pay $19/hr.”

Chick-fil-A has been under fire in the past for other serious matters as well. Specifically regarding their donations to anti-LGBTQ causes, the founders comments on the LGBTQ, and CEO Dan Cathy’s comments on the LGBTQ community, amongst other things. This isn’t even touching on the fact that they’re closed on Sundays.

Here’s the thing about Chick-fil-A… it’s fine. Not even good, just fine. Some would even say nasty and I wouldn’t fight them on it. There are PLENTY of other fried chicken sandwiches out there that you can get without a history of backlash.

There’s one with Kool-Aid on it, Buffalo Wild Wings has new sandwiches that can be covered in any of their sauces and spices, and McDonald’s even has fried chicken sandwich rugs available for sale. The flavor of the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich and the rugs at McDonald’s are pretty comparable. I promise you. You can even go all the way to France and get a better fried chicken sandwich and it doesn’t neglect any person based on their life preferences.
