Amazon Aims To Deliver Ready-To-Eat Meals That Don’t Require A Microwave

amazon ready to eat meals

Following their major acquisition of Whole Foods, Amazon hopes to expand their food portfolio with some novel food technology. The company is reportedly looking at developing a lineup of ready-to-eat Amazon meals that you can eat upon opening. Options may include sausage frittatas and beef stew, and can be eaten without using a microwave or hot water.

These meals, which are currently being developed by startup 915 Labs, are made using a novel cooking method called “Microwave Assisted Thermal Sterilization.” Developed at Washington State University and the U.S. military, the technique involves placing sealed meal packages in pressurized water and cooking them with microwaves. The final product can keep for up to a year at room temperature while maintaining their original texture and flavor. 915 is currently awaiting FDA approval for their dishes, which opens the gateway for Amazon to contract with another business.

That company, food startup Solve For Food, is in the process of acquiring a machine that can use this tech from 915 Labs. They then hope to contract with Amazon as early as next year to sell their meals through Amazon Fresh. Amazon is currently in talks with Solve For Food to make the new Amazon meals a reality, according to Reuters.

If Amazon did put them up for sale, these meals would revolutionize on-the-go food as we know it. Wholesome and nutritious meals that don’t require refrigeration would be great for anyone desiring tasty meals they can consume instantly. We’ll be looking out to see if Amazon does choose to go through with this plan. If they do, the Amazon meals could truly revolutionize the future of on-the-go food.
