Watch This ‘Space Pie’ Travel Into The Stratosphere

Of all the things to send into the stratosphere, this might be one of the most delicious.

UK-based SentIntoSpace took a meat and potato pie and sent it up into the stratosphere this past week, as reported by the BBC. The pie, now being called the “space pie,” was attached to a weather balloon and released nearly 100,000 feet into the air, placing it in Earth’s stratosphere.

The space enthusiast team used a camera and some tracking equipment to monitor the pie’s journey, which is where footage from the above video came from.

The purpose of this crazy trip? To see if the already-cooked pie’s molecular structure would change during the trip. In simpler words, they were attempting to see if the pie would freeze and reheat itself upon re-entry.

While the pie had already landed after a three day journey, there was no determination into whether that experiment was successful — mainly because nobody was gutsy enough to give it a taste.

That could also just be because this pie was launched into space for another purpose as well — as a promotion. The pie was used to promote the World Pie Eating Championships, which take place in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England tomorrow.

Nevertheless, it’s a cool trip for a humble pie to take, and we would’ve loved to get our hands on it for a taste.
