Nestle’s New “Hollow Sugar” Cuts Calories But Tastes The Same
Eating the same amount of sugar, but with lower calories just became a possibility, according to Nestle.
Nestle announced that they’ve created a new technology for sugar crystals that let’s them dissolve quicker, and drop the sugar content by 40 percent.
Fortune reported that food scientists within the company have developed an undisclosed, patent-pending method to create these hollow sugar crystals that will significantly drop the sugar (and thus calories) in Nestle’s chocolate products.

This drop in calories won’t mean a drop in flavor. Nestle claims that products will taste nearly the same with this new chocolate. Since the company is striving for a drop in sugar content across their products, along with consumers wanting less added sugar, this is a win-win for both – and a huge revolution for the sugar industry (or maybe just for Nestle, who will own the hollow sugar).
While the patent hasn’t been filed yet, the company hopes to release products containing this “hollow sugar” by 2018. We can expect to find this in Kit-Kats and other chocolates made by the candy-producing giant.
We’re curious to see how they will taste, and are excited to see if it really won’t change with this new version of sugar.
