Gay Men Can Be Arrested For Drinking Baileys Irish Cream in Cameroon

The Republic of Cameroon is not very gay friendly, to say the least. In fact, it’s literally illegal to be gay, or even act in what is stereotyped as being gay. Apparently that means if you’re a man and get caught sipping some Baileys Irish Cream, that’s considered to be linked to gayness and can cost a man jail time.

Think Progress reported the recollections of a human rights lawyer who defended dozens of gay people in Cameroon.  Michael Togue said one of his clients was convicted for having feminine mannerisms and drinking Baileys Irish Cream. The judge felt Baileys was a woman’s drink, so a five year sentenced was dropped on the man.

The police in Cameroon actually use gender stereotypes to arrest suspected gay men. By those ridiculous standards, I’d probably get arrested right now for bumping Ariana Grande and drinking this Starbucks Passion Tea Lemonade. And that kale salad I had for lunch would probably be out of the question.

It’s crazy to think as hard as people fight for gay rights here in the United States, some places are way worse. At least guys can have a nice champagne brunch, give zero fucks and not get arrested for it here. ‘Murica.
