JFK Library Shares Ernest Hemingway’s Favorite Burger Recipe

Hemingway Burger Recipe

This burger recipe may shed some light on Hemingway’s love affair with food. Titled “Papa’s favorite Hamburger recipe” and recently made available digitally from the archives of the JFK Library, it gives us a glimpse into the life of the man who wrote passionately about oysters and wine in Paris.

The burger blends Chinese influences, capers, wine, parsley and soy sauce, demonstrating the “gusto” that Hemingway was known for.  As a man who loved adventure, food, and a nice hunk of meat, this burger (which was “pink and juicy in the middle) gives us a glimpse into his home cooking.  According to Mary, his fourth wife who typed out the recipe, the burgers were intended for “tramping through the sagebrush” — as classic a Hemingway reason as you can find.  As for how the burger tastes?  We’ll have to get back to you on that one, but we bet it’s well enjoyed alongside a copy of A Moveable Feast and a glass of dark red pinot.
