Neonisin Edible Toothpaste Makes It Finally Safe to Swallow

There are a couple reasons not to leave babies alone in the bathroom. They could hurt themselves. They could try to eat their own poop. Or they could get their grubby little hands on a whole tube of toothpaste and mistake the minty freshness for some fancy new kind of milk and die of fluoride poisoning.

Luckily, for those of us who have little people to worry about (or who occasionally forget how to human), Neonisin edible toothpaste finally exists.

Now I’m not saying I secretly wish I could eat toothpaste, but it’s nice thinking I won’t have to fear death every time I brush my teeth (a whole two times a day, thank you very much). It’s also nice knowing it’s actually safe to swallow.

According to Rocket News, the active ingredient in Neonisin is Nisin, a peptide which is harvested from lactic bacteria found in soy bean curd. From there, natural flavoring, plum extract, mint oil and corn-based thickeners are added in order to create the all-natural and completely edible dental-cleansing agent, so you’re basically brushing your teeth with tofu. Delicious, if slightly off-putting, tofu.

Moreover, unlike other natural toothpastes currently on the market, Neonisin is able to “rapidly disinfect” just like more conventional pastes and be consumed without any negative impact to the gastrointestinal system.

It will be available in Japan over summer and cost around $8.90 for a 2.5 ounce tube, so until it comes stateside, who’s up for a trip to 99 Ranch?
