Nutella Thefts At Columbia Make Headlines, Proves Smart People Really Like Nutella Too

Undergrads at Columbia University were treated to a daily dose of Nutella in select dining halls on campus, but things soon turned salty after the university noticed that they were running through the sweet stuff faster than anticipated — to the tune of 100 pounds a day.

Dining hall officials noticed that the cafeteria wasn’t the only place where the  chocolate hazelnut spread was being consumed. The students were hoarding the stuff like gold, smuggling it out of the dining hall in cups or pilfering entire jars.

It was originally reported that Vicki Dunn, Executive Director of Dining Services, stated that first week the students went through over $5,000 worth of Nutella. However that figure has been updated to $2,500 and costs subsequently dropped to $450 in the last few weeks.

Ironically, recent reports are saying that all this attention has actually caused a decrease in Nutella theft.

Either way, it seems like the students are nuts for the stuff. Go figure.
