Rainn Wilson + Del Taco Twitter Stunt — What Happened?

You might know him as Dwight Schrute from the NBC show The Office, but today, Rainn Wilson is making some serious rounds for his peculiar Twitter antics. On October 25th, he let out a Tweet that was supposedly a private message for his assistant that read: “Joanne — tell @DelTaco I will accept $12,000 to plug their shitty food. Thanks, Rainn”

That “private text” actually went out to Rainn’s 2.6 million Twitter followers. He quickly followed up that Tweet with the following: “Please disregard last tweet — was a private text to my assistant.”

He then followed that one up with the plug, “Loving the new @DelTaco Macho Bellgrande Burrito! It’s Beeftacular(tm)!”

Now the question is, did Rainn Wilson actually make a huge mistake, or is this all part of a unique publicity stunt for Del Taco? Further uestions that immediately come to mind are:

  • -Why hasn’t Rainn Wilson deleted his inadvertent “text” if it’s so defamatory towards the Del Taco brand?
  • -Rainn Wilson is a rather avid Twitter user, would he really make such a mistake inadvertently?

If it turns out that Del Taco actually did commission the tweet, what are your thoughts on pay-for-tweets such as this? If he hadn’t turned it into such a fiasco with his “inadvertent text” beforehand, it would mean a silent a $12k Del Taco endorsement from a major celebrity.

There appears to be a lot going on here. Or, very little.
