Sorcery! The World’s First Standing Soft Taco

One of the sorriest things you’ll ever experience is a broken, soggy taco. While the resulting spillage of taco meat, salsa, lettuce and cheese makes for a great chip dip, most of us would rather avoid the troublesome situation at all costs.

Behold, ahem:  Stand ‘n Stuff Soft Flour Tortillas by Old El Paso. Like the hard shell Stand ‘n Stuff,  the soft taco version claims to “stand up” on its own thanks to its unique bowl-like shape and flat bottom. As in, you can place one of these tortilla bowls on your plate and fill ’em up without fear of it toppling over into a hotmess smorgasbord of taco condiments.

Naturally, we decided to put these bad boys to the test, so Geoff threw together some taco fillings for the team.

The verdict: true to its claim, these bucket-like soft tortillas held up as we filled them with ground beef, shredded cheese, tomatoes and loads of hot sauce. As we bit into them, the mini taco submarines were strong enough to keep from breaking, despite the fact that the juices from the beef, tomatoes and sauces were pooling together — something that usually spells death for your average taco shell.

Overall, the Stand ‘N Stuff Soft Flour Tortilla is a solid blend of form and function — combining an eye-catching design that is convenient and practical. The standing soft taco requires no folding, frying or wrapping, which makes it a great option for picnics and outdoorsy folks. The flavor, however, is where this item is lacking. In the end, it’s essentially a store-bought tortilla shell, so don’t expect anything spectacular in terms of taste.

Still, the mere idea of holding a nearly-indestructible taco submarine stuffed with inappropriate amounts of hot sauce and carnitas? Girl, don’t tempt us.
