This Restaurant Plays Audio Clips of the Worst Yelp Reviews for Bathroom Patrons

Yelp has become the ubiquitous bane of restaurateurs and chefs. With 84 million unique visitors a month and a Yelp app accessed by 8.2 million unique mobile devices per month, according to Restaurant Hospitality, it is near impossible to evade the damnation of a negative Yelp review.

So what to do when you can’t beat ‘em? Blast ‘em, of course. Craft & Commerce, a gastropub located in San Diego, has chosen the more forward approach and taken to playing audio clips of their best worst Yelp reviews while patrons do their business in the bathroom. It’s a brilliant tactic that throws up a defiant middle finger to online critics, DGAFing at its best, if you will.

An example of a clip that may sound off while you defecate:

FRIES — Too chewy and hard. In my opinion, not ideal. If I came back, I’d substitute the fries for something else. You know, like replacing one American puppet dictator with another. You know, to eventually promote democracy or something like that….ATTIRE – To blend in, dress up with hipster tones and flaunt a New York accent. – Brian K.

Of course, the fact that Craft & Commerce hosts chef Jason McLeod, winner of two Michelin stars, and that the restaurant is known nationally for its craft cocktail and beer programs, gives them a bit of leverage in this situation. Regardless, their bold maneuver will no doubt provide a source of inspiration for folks in the restaurant industry trying to battle their own negative Yelp press.

I’m glad this restaurant has found a unique approach of dealing with yelp’s negative reviews. Good for them :)

I’m from San Diego. Craft & Commerce is an awesome restaurant (was just there Sunday). Super quirky – this sounds exactly like something they’d do. They also don’t serve ketchup. Their attitude is basically, “We’re going to run the restaurant we want.” I respect that.

Do they serve vinegar by chance?

And our customers be damned! What a load of pretentious crap.

They don’t damn their customers. Quite the opposite. The point is that if someone doesn’t like the food they serve, or how they handle reviews, or how they handle reservations, then they are not their customer to start with. If more businesses stayed true to what they believe and quit trying to be everything to everyone, I believe they’d find greater success.

I think they are missing the point. Maybe try FIXING the problems that customers are experiencing instead of making fun of the customers for the “nerve” they have to complain about the bad service/food/etc. This just shows the world that they do not care about customers at all and want to flaunt it with their cocky attitude. At this rate I doubt they will be in business much longer.

The point is that Yelp reviews are often biased and unfounded – yet there’s no way for a restaurant to fight back. This team is taking the most outrageous, obviously false claims and making it part of the experience. Oh, and they just won a national award for being a great restaurant. They’ll be around for a while. (see http://web.utsandiego.com/news/2011/dec/08/craft-commerce-among-uss-best-bars/)

This is awesome! Usually when I ready a bad yelp review, it’s around like 30 good ones. I’m like … I think that person had some sand in their va-j-j that day. More useful is when there are tons of reviews like “eh, this place is just ok” — then I know I could skip that joint and not regret it.
