Don’t Play With Your Food – Turn it Into Celebrity Art and Sell it for $18,000

“I want to eat Michael Jackson’s gummy bear face” is not a thought that often runs through my head, but after looking at this candy portrait by 32-year-old artist Cristiam Ramos, I was ready to chow down on the King of Pop’s newest artificial mug.

While Ramos does use edible ingredients – mainly gummy bears, licorice, M&Ms, and peppermints; he does also incorporate copious amounts of hot glue gun glue, as seen in this video of the artist in action. Also, Cristiam has made quite the name for himself, selling his work for upwards of $18,000; so you don’t want to go eating these valuable Warhol-esque pieces.

The sugary medium proves ripe for interpretation and analysis. Clearly, there is a connection between the sweet, digestible nature of the candy and the personas of these hyper-popular entertainers. Going a bit deeper and considerably more cynical, is Ramos suggesting an artificiality to the mega personalities as represented by thee processed industrial “food” he uses in his work? Perhaps Cristiam had no pretentious philosophical message in mind and is simply really good with a hot glue gun. Whatever the case, I could really go for a nibble of Beyoncé’s earring.
