The Worst Sandwich Some Guy On Yelp Ever Ate

Yelp has lead me to the best pork bun I ever ate, the finest gourmet cocktail in Los Angeles and almost deterred me from a quaint and affordable bed & breakfast because reviewers claimed that the front desk attendants were rude and a homeless man walked too close to the reviewer’s daughter. I decided to stay at that bed and breakfast. Although the curtain-heavy wooden rod did fall when I tried to close the curtain, I slept happy, ate free muffins in the morning and through it all the attendants smiled, albeit weakly.

There’s a lot of buzz amongst business owners because just a few bad reviews can have really costly effects; for one owner, a bad review resulted in a 25% drop in revenue. Many believe that Yelp removes negative reviews in turn for advertisement and neglects to remove possible fake bad reviews on other businesses which don’t participate in the advertisement, prompting some to take Yelp to court for extortion. You could do that, or you can draw customers in with a  joke about the whole situation, which may just be an algorithm issue to begin with. Come on, aren’t you a little curious about that meatball sandwich?

As a child, Dominique Boubion would sometimes sleep until noon and pout that she missed breakfast. She shamelessly asked permission to eat breakfast followed by lunch back to back. In those days her favorite food was a cheeseburger, a craving she regularly suppresses while exploring the foodie world of a raw and vegan diet. But while still eating cheeseburgers.

That’s an awesome idea! Thanks for pointing it out… I wonder if the business has better reviews now from customers who came in because of the sign.

    “negative revenue”?

Don’t know about better reviews, but if I saw that sign, I’d go straight inside and order that sandwich, LOL

Wait. Yelp sells advertising? They must be doing it wrong, because I’ve never taken notice of an on Yelp. OK, I went there just now and saw a large banner ad for Xfinity, but I don’t see how that relates to the local restaurants I’m reading about. All of the ads I found on their site were big companies like Comcast and Microsoft. None of them were for local business that might benefit by having Yelp mess with their reviews.

they contact companies on yelp, offer them a hard-sell 1 year ad commitment and offer them better placement in the search engine. they’ve tried it with my company. if you dont accept, your rankings shoot down.

As a small business owner, I can confirm Peter Moran’s comment. It IS a HARD sell, quite pricey, and owners are definitely told any negative reviews can be “scrubbed” or floated to the top, depending on $$ compliance. It’s also how businesses with mostly terrible 1- and 2-star reviews still have an overall rating of 3.5-4.5 stars.
