In Spite of Ban, Restaurant Hosts Decadent Foie Gras Burger Eating Challenge

It’s the Shut the Duck Up Burger, a mouthwatering thumb in the air at the foie gras ban in California created by chef Jason Quinn of The Playground restaurant in Orange County.

The new burger comes as a double instance of his popular, now off-the-menu Playground Burger that many call the best burger they’ve ever had. For those unfamiliar, the Playground Burger traditionally comes with a Wagyu chuck & dry-age ribeye torchon patty, Tomme de Savoie and a ration of maple-bourbon onions. With Quinn’s latest creation, he doubles the brand’s trademark patty, and tops it all with some beautifully prepared foie gras.

While it remains illegal to sell foie in California restaurants, loopholes remain intact that allow establishments to basically give the meat away through their own creative means. As an added statement, The Playground, along with clothing brand Orisue (and full disclosure, Foodbeast will be there too) will be hosting a 10-person, high-end eating contest featuring the decadent new burger, along with a side of fries and a frosty craft brew.

Coined Gluttons and Glory, the event will take place August 11th at 9:30 p.m. If you’re in the area, make sure to swing by and make sure you grab a good seat, you won’t want to miss a second of this foie gras overload.

What a neat idea.  Eating solid fat that’s made from torturing animals.  What could be more fun?

Love your site, and this article is neat and all.

But — just my $0.02 — you’ve got to have more content outside of Orange County.  FYI, a lot of people, across the country/globe, kind of look at OC as the locus of all evil on the planet — if they’re aware of it at all.  So, I realize you’re based there, but if you want to have a more profitable site, you need to get news from outside the area you live in.  Here’s a few tips: Try covering a few stories from Vegas.  Lots of foodie news in Vegas.  It’s not too far from you, and heavily publicized, so the news should be easy to find.  Throw some of that into the mix.  If that sounds too confusing, try Los Angeles.  Note that you don’t have to actually be “there” to get a story from “there.”  It would probably help to have contacts, someone who can go someplace and take a decent photo; an e-mail list might help you with that, or a list of local food bloggers.  But at this point, that’s not your highest priority; just use publicity photos. Also, be sure to find out what good food actually is.  Forget gourmet foods; many are just gimmicky and hard to relate to.  Watch some Tony Bourdain, or read his books.  Taste some excellent hole-in-the-wall/street foods.  Also, broaden your horizons.  Subscribe to some chef trade magazines, and note especially where they describe the trends, foods, and recipes that every restaurant will offer in six months.  Get a subscription to Saveur.  Or go to your library and pull a bunch of old issues.  See how they handle covering local food stories across the globe.  Ditch the seriousness, and add some humor, and you’ll be good to go.  Watch some episodes on YouTube of Food Network’s old “The Best Of” series (with Jill Cordes, Marc Silverstein) would be helpful as well; simple, easy to do, interesting.  Lastly, ask questions of your readers.  Go to a Walmart; note weird/new food offerings, and ask if anyone’s tried it yet.  ”I see coconut milk suddenly for sale everywhere — what do you do with it?”  Or, “Asian markets have lots of weird stuff; what do you actually buy/eat from there?”  Engage.

Come celebrate animal cruelty and enjoy the utter disregard for animal welfare that only this fine restaurant can serve up.  State of California legislators are warmly welcomed.

I’d like to see this a$$hole stuffed with food against his will for a good while and then I’d like his opinion on foie gras again

I had this burger in January and it was the best burger I’ve ever had! I run a burger blog and shot this video of Jason describing his burger. It’s almost a PHD dissertation on burgerology. Uncannily good. http://youtu.be/n8YvCwu-mHM My review is at http://chbr.gr/play
